My Boy’s Holding Up

Thank you for your kind comments and supportive thoughts on my last post about Cosmo’s oral cancer diagnosis. I thought it’d be a good time for an update.

The vet says he has weeks-to-months of life to share with us. I’m not sure from when that clock started ticking because he’s had mouth issues since February, and only recently received a clear diagnosis. He’s on daily steroids to reduce his mouth swelling, as well as something to help his tummy handle those meds. He’s also on pain medications as needed. Let’s just say he’s not a fan of taking his pills, but what cat is? We wrap him in a towel and he looks like he’s wearing a little spa bathrobe.

His appetite is voracious, and I’m sure some of that has to do with the steroids. He can demolish a plate of food and come back for seconds … or fifths. He’s still grooming himself, and I tell him what a handsome boy he is. His “bathroom” habits are normal, which is a good sign.

Pillow thief!

Each night, shortly after we turn off the bedroom light, we hear him enter the room and jump onto the bed. He then insists on diving beneath the covers, right in between us and purring until he drifts off for the night. This is probably one of my favorite things he does. He presses himself right up against me and I rest my hand on him. It’s definitely helped an insomnia sufferer like me get some shuteye. He’s such a calming presence.

Yesterday he was acting more lethargic than usual and seemed sad; and he didn’t fight much when we gave him his pills. I went to bed worried, thinking if I didn’t hear him jump on the bed, it’d be a bad sign. Thankfully, he did complete his nightly ritual and I went to sleep with his gentle purring vibration moving through my body, telling me, “I’m OK. Go to sleep.”

Let me love you, cranky boy!

Today he’s still lethargic, but everything else is fine. I’m thankful to work from home and am keeping an eagle eye on him. I’m also getting extra snuggles. Well, I’m taking them and they’re mandatory. I want to load up the snuggle reserves because somehow I feel like they’ll be there when his body no longer is. Whatever. It makes me feel better.

I’m writing way more than I expected to write. My boyfriend and I recently started French lessons on Monday nights and I need to finally take a shower so I’m ready when he gets home. Thank you again for asking and caring. It does mean a lot — I want you to know that.

Je t’aime, Cosmo.

  1. Bank lots of those snuggles. Cosmo probably gets just as much comfort from them as you do. Keeping you and him on my prayer list.

I’m heartbroken and sad for you. As I write this with tears in my eyes. I’ve had two cats pass away from cancer 6 months apart. You want to do all you can for them. I’m lucky to work from home as welll. I will keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. Our cat whiskers died from cancer behind his ear and spread very quickly. I’m sorry I can’t or don’t know what else to say as my tears won’t let me. But know I will always be thinking of you. And I do love your texts from mittens. Xoxo to all of you.

    1. Thank you for the kind words. xo

You are a good cat mama. Cozmo is lucky to have you! Remember treats after pills. I dont know if it makes it better for us vs them but its worth the effort. Keep in mind its a Monday and cats hate Mondays as much as we do! Cozmo is like Mittens, they both love their mama.

    1. Thank you!

It sucks how truly little time we get to have with them. I’ve been an animal parent for years, lost many and it never gets easier. Yet I keep doing it because they bring so much to my life, just like your boy does for you. Enjoy your time with him.

It’s so awful to lose a furbaby. Sounds like he’s been a very sweet, loving companion. And that you’ve given him a reason to be that way. There’s no easy way to accept this so soak up those snuggles and enjoy him for as long as you can. Sending love.

Thanks for keeping us updated, Cosmo is our friend too! I’m sorry you are both going through this, I know from experience it’s terrifying at times. Remember all your readers are thinking of you and probably like me are crying when reading updates. Stay strong!!

My heart is with you. Praying that you and Cosmo have as many days of purrs and snuggles as possible.

  11. Sending comforting purrs and Power of the Paw from my fur babies to Cosmo. It is so difficult watching our fur kids decline as they age or become ill. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Hugs

  12. You know, following cosmo on your blog inspired me to take home a tuxedo kitty with a mark on his forehead just like cosmo!

    1. Now you’re gonna make me cry! <3
      Thank you.

My cat Jordan had a tumor on his back leg. It slowly got larger but he acted as if it was nothing.Apparently some cats can tolerate a LOT of pain. Finally when I saw it was starting to break through his skin I decided he must be in agony and made the hard decision. We were lucky that our vet was able to euthanize him at home to reduce his stress. His cat sibs were also able to see he was gone before we buried him. I still miss him a lot. Surprisingly we have since adopted another all black cat with many of Jordan’s personality quirks. Wishing you all the best for the time you have left.

  14. What a great mom lady you are! Unfortunately sickness and death are a part of life we must endure. All the more love you can give and receive will hopefully cushion the difficult times. Hugs and purrs to you all!

Such a sweet boy. Our girl Ginger had to take pills the last year of her life and we used Greenies feline pill pockets. She never liked treats, but she would snarf these down, pills and all. They are a little pricey, but they were a bit easier on all of us.

I am sorry to hear about Cosmos’s Cancer Diagnosis, Angie! I’m happy to hear that he is not having problems eating and that he isn’t having any issues going to the bathroom. It’s great that he still sleeps in your bed at night! I pray that he keeps doing well!

Hugs and big love to you and Cosmo. I am now on the 12th, 13th, and 14th members of the Gang of Fur. It doesn’t get easier, it is only that each day is a little different. Treasure your moments. <3 <3 <3

Keeping you all in my thoughts my friend. Sending love and warrior strength for all if you. Enjoy every minute as we should all no guarantees for any of us so live in the moment. Hang tough….

  19. I’m so sorry but I’m glad he’s hanging in

  20. Take every cuddle and snuggle you can get. I lost one of my babies to mouth cancer two years ago. It was very aggressive and we lost him the day it was diagnosed. I missed the time to save those loves! Give Cosmo an extra hug from me and my babies and tell him he IS a very handsome boy.

  21. I’m so sorry but I know you’re enjoying every moment.

I’m glad Cosmo’s hanging in there. He is definitely a handsome boy and deserves all the love and pets and cuddles in the world. I lost a cat to cancer last February, and there’s a possibility my other cat might have cancer. He has an ultrasound on 7/6 that, hopefully, will give us some answers. I do not want to go through the hell of cancer again. xp

  23. He’s lucky to have you as his human, Angie. And you to have Cosmo as your cat. Making his last days as comfortable and enjoyable as possible is what we can do for our feline companions. It’s heartbreaking to lose them, but that is offset by the joy they brought to our lives while they were there. There are two cats that for about 15 years I have taken care of for a friend of mine when she travels. One of them passed away a few months ago, thanks to my friend I was invited to come and say goodbye to him before the end. Now it seems we’re about the lose the other one as well. I cry for them, even though I’m not their full-time human. I have has the pleasure of knowing them for a very long time and I will miss them. Fortunately, my three current feline companions are all healthy and happy, so there’s that. Know, Angie, that my heart goes out to you and Cosmo. Enjoy the time you have together and keep the happy memories close to your heart.

I am so sorry that Cosmo and you have to deal with this; this is how I lost my very first cat, Tinkertoy, over twenty years ago. May you both still have some wonderful times together.

I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. Sending my love to you all during this difficult time.

  28. Sounds like you have created a wonderful and strong bond with Cosmo which I suppose makes it that much harder to deal with. Stay strong for Cosmo and cherish every moment. Our prayers are with him and hope he stays strong for as long and possible.

  29. I am sorry I lost track of you and missed this diagnosis all together and only heard of it because of his passing. I’ve always had a soft spot for Cosmo and your kitties. Sending deep rumbly purrs of comfort and condolence
